Bike for your Life in Parksville

Bike ride raises money for Oceanside Stroke Recovery group

UPDATE: Corrected to fix information about prizes available.

Organizers invite the community to the annual Bike For Your Life event for good health and a cleaner environment.

Established in 1999, the fun, all ages ride starts and ends at the Parksville Community and Civic Centre on August 12. The routes range from 15 to 100 kilometres, perfect for everyone from novice to diehard.

They are expecting over 300 riders again this year and highlight the fun, non-competitive way for individuals and families to get involved in and help promote cycling as a part of everyday life.

A portion of the fee goes to the Oceanside Stroke Recovery Association and many stroke survivors help run the event.

The various routes travel throughout District 69 along the coast and rural areas and will be well marked with marshals at strategic locations.

The 100 km route is known as the Jim Ryan Memorial Route in honour of the local rider who tragically passed away in a biking accident in 2007.

There will be refreshments, rest stations and prizes.

Riders must wear an approved bicycle helmet, and are expected to obey traffic laws. Organizers also recommend high visibility clothing and people should have their bicycles serviced.
