Seminar focuses on equine emergencies

When a horse gets stuck in the mud, it's not a joke

How do you rescue a horse that’s stuck in the mud?

It’s not a question that comes up in most people’s lives, but it very well could if you happen to be a police officer or a fireman, says Silver Spur Riding Club spokesperson Liz Sahlstrom.

That’s why, she said, she has made a point to invite police and firefighters from around the area to a special one-day seminar on emergency equine response, slated for 10 a.m. to noon on Oct. 27 at Tiger Lily Farm in Errington.

“We have put together a response kit with many items that could be needed during an equine emergency including phone numbers of people to call for help, strapping, tarps, extra halters and leads, fencing, and so on,” she said. “We we have firemen coming from Denman Island, Dashwood, Parksville, Qualicum Beach, Errington and hopefully others. The  RCMP are sending a member, too.”
