Gordon Lightfoot may be gone but his music is alive and well.

Sundown: A Gordon Lightfoot Experience is a tribute to the late Canadian music legend and they will play at the McMillan Arts Centre (MAC) in Parksville on Sept. 16.

The band focuses on the first decade of Lightfoot’s music, but also covers some of his later work including a song from his last album, released in 2020.

“I was overwhelmed by the magnitude of what he had accomplished musically in his career, but also struck by how important he was to me, personally,” said Trevor Price, the band’s founder, in a news release. “Believing this to be true for many people, I felt that this was a worthwhile musical project.”

Price saw Lightfoot play in Nanaimo last November and decided it was time to form a tribute. Just a few months later on May 1 Lightfoot died at 84 years old.

“I’ve been a fan of Gordon Lightfoot’s music since I was a little kid,” said Price, who was deeply saddened, but not shocked by Lightfoot’s death.

Price hopes to bring Lightfoot’s music to both those who remember when it was released and also to younger audiences.

He is joined by Andrew McMillan on bass and Bob Wilson on lead guitar.

The show goes from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the MAC (133 McMillan St.).

Tickets are $25. They are available in advance at the MAC’s website and at the door.

Sundown: A Gordon Lightfoot Experience will play a concert at Char’s Landing in Port Alberni later this month.
