The Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) will conduct feasibility work to establish fire services in the Horne Lake community.

The RDN board has approved up to $50,000 of Area H Feasibility Funds to be used for the project to determine the financial impact and location feasibility.

Two potential sites are being considered for a satellite firehall to provide fire protection service. The project will help gauge the costs associated with either option and the next steps to proceed.

The feasibility work will be undertaken by contractors under the guidance of the RDN Fire Services Team.

The Horne Lake region and the Spider Lake area have experienced significant growth and development over the years. Recreational activity in the region has also grown, raising the concerns of property owners and visitors regarding fire safety and cost of residential insurance, which they are paying more due to the absence of a fire department in the area.
