Parksville, Qualicum Beach see another busy year for building permits

2023 may not have been a record year for City of Parksville building permits, but it was one of the busiest yet.

The city issued 80 permits worth $68,519,830, down from more than $102 million in 2022, when 143 were approved, according to city statistics. In terms of dollars, only 2022, 2019 and 2020 were higher.

The majority of the permit value comes from multi-family residential projects — there were 237 units approved for a total of $56,517,281.

Parksville also saw 11 commercial permits issued with a value of $2.7 million.

It was also a busy year for the Town of Qualicum Beach, which issued more than $45 million in building permits from January through November of last year, according to town statistics. Data for December will be available for town council’s Jan. 17 meeting, according to the town.

Almost half of that $45 million comes from two multi-family residential projects at 136 Second Ave East and 685 Second Ave East, with permit values of $11.2 million and $9.4 million respectively.

Across the Regional District of Nanaimo, approximately $100 million worth of building permits were approved in 2023.
