Parksville has been recognized as Canada’s 32nd most livable city.
In results from The Globe and Mail, Parksville contended with 438 cities, with a population of more than 10,000, which were ordered based on 43 variables that span 10 categories considered important when a person looks to relocate to a new area.
“This recognition confirms the amazing quality of life we have come to expect in Parksville,” said Mayor Doug O’Brien. “We are proud of this ranking as the city with the lowest population in the top 50 on the list.”
The categories are economy, housing, demographics, health care, safety, education, community, amenities, transportation and climate.
O’Brien said he believes the high ranking indicates a strong sense of belonging in the community, and pointed out that Parksville is 64 per cent lower than the Canadian average for likelihood of crime.
Seventy-three per cent of respondents indicated a strong sense of belonging, according to The Globe and Mail.

When ordered by best climate, Parksville shoots up to 13, thanks to its year-round mild climate, where on average there are zero days with a minimum temperature colder than minus-15 C.
“Our waterfront Parksville Community Park has become the optimum gathering place featuring many festivals and events showcasing our award-winning Parksville outdoor theatre,” O’Brien said. “As well as the waterfront walkway which is the best place to celebrate and view incredible sunsets.”
Parksville was joined by several Island communities in the top 100, including Victoria (1), Saanich (7), Oak Bay (10), Colwood (25), Central Saanich (40), Nanaimo (63) and Sidney (78).

One area where Parksville could improve is transportation. According to The Globe and Mail, the city is 54 per cent less walkable than the Canadian average.
