People go to Las Vegas for many reasons, but for most people, shopping for mattresses and sofas isn’t at the top of the list. But Mark Nagra is not ‘most people.’
The owner of M&N Mattress and Sofa Gallery in Parksville travelled to Vegas at the end of January for the Las Vegas Market, an annual furniture, mattress and decor symposium with a whopping six million square feet of showrooms to explore.
“With so much to explore and only three-and-a-half days, you really have to plan ahead. I start with the smallest building, Building A, which is eight storeys. Building B and Building C are both 16 storeys — I head to the top and work my way down, making notes of the products that I want to look at, and that might be interesting to our customers in our community,” Mark says.
The average consumer would feel overwhelmed at a place like the Las Vegas Market, but with over three decades of experience Mark knows what to look for.
“We started carrying the Pure Energy Mattress after seeing it at the Las Vegas Market. We were the first official dealer for that mattress in Canada, and 12 years later I haven’t found anything better, in my opinion. I often ask customers, if they find a better mattress they should let me know so I can carry it. But so far, based on the combination of quality, technology, warranty and production process, the Pure Energy Ironman Mattress is still at the top of the list for me and many of our customers,” Mark says.
What’s trending in mattresses and sofas
Exploring products is just one part of the work Mark does in Las Vegas. He also takes part in seminars on everything from new trends and product education to digital marketing. He also makes time to connect with existing suppliers.
“I have great relationships with a lot of our suppliers, since we mostly carry BC-made mattresses and sofas. But the Market is a good opportunity to get face-to-face with the owners, CEOs and Presidents of these and other companies,” he says. “The goal is to get the best products and best value for our customers.”
Alongside up-and-coming colours, designs and fabrics already trending across Europe, Mark took a hard look at a line of handmade, all-natural mattresses that might be a good fit for his Parksville customers.
“Someone brought me into a showroom with a queen-sized mattress that retails for $40,000. They’re hand tufted, made one-at-a-time, and it’s pretty impressive how precisely they’re assembled.”
He considered putting one of their more affordable models in the M&N Mattress and Sofa Gallery showroom, but in the end decided maybe at a later time. Still, Mark came back from Vegas with lots of new information and product ideas to share with his community. Stop by the store to hear more about it!
