MV Coho sailings are set to resume between Victoria and Port Angeles after a vehicle fire interrupted the ferry service Thursday (May 16).

Five fire crews were called for the vehicle fire at the Port Angeles terminal to battle a blaze aboard the 3 p.m. sailing from Victoria.

Citing extremely low visibility, lots of hazards and exposures, and a potential for a mass casualty incident, crews from Port Angeles Fire Department, Clallam 2 Fire-Rescue, Clallam County Fire Dist. 3 (Sequim), Clallam County Fire Dist. 4 (Joyce), and Olympic Ambulance responded.

“Let’s give a big hand for the shipboard firefighters of the Black Ball Ferry Line who were first due on this fire. They worked their tails off protecting a hometown treasure, their patrons, and your local firefighters tonight,” Clallam 2 Fire-Rescue said in a social media post.

The 5:15 p.m. sailing from Port Angeles and the 7:30 out of Victoria that night were cancelled, with all sailings set to resume Friday.

“We are thankful for the efforts of our crew and the Port Angeles Fire Department in containing the fire,” Black Ball Ferry Line said in a statement. “We appreciate everyone’s patience and apologize for any inconvenience this has caused.”
