December is generally a quiet month for Arrowsmith Search and Rescue (ASAR) but that is not proving to be the case this year.

Since Dec. 1, ASAR has responded to calls for a missing child and lost senior locally, plus mutual aid calls to Port Alberni and Nanaimo and a multi-day response to Sooke, according to a news release by ASAR.

On Dec. 18, ASAR was called to search for a family that hadn’t returned from a trip from the Horne Lake Caves area.

Search and rescue members responded with their track-equipped UTV and 4X4 with chains and were able to locate the family stuck on a logging road, according to the release.

Members were able to get their vehicle unstuck and escort them back to the highway, which was extremely slippery with compact snow.

“Everyone safely returned home,” the release read. “In this case the family had let someone know exactly where they were going and expecting to be back which greatly reduced the search area and resources needed.”
