The Bodyworks Babes finish their Big Bike fundraising ride around Parksville Tuesday

The Heart and Stroke Foundation's Big Bike took some spirited laps around Parksville and Qualicum Beach this week, raising money for a good cause, while having a lot fun and a workout in the sun.

The big bike was in Parksville June 3 with eight teams taking a turn on the 30 seat, truck-like bicycle. They raised over $16,600 together, with the Coastal Community Credit Union Coast-A-Nators' $5,265 leading the pack.

Five teams took turns in Qualicum Beach the next day, but the amount raised was not available at press time.

Organizers said that was less teams than usual in Qualicum Beach, but they still had their big fundraisers, including Coast Realty Group which has raised more than $25,000 for the Heart and Stroke Foundation over the years.

"It's just a great cause and it gets everybody motivated," said Pat Culic, Parksville Bodyworks Babes team captain after their boisterous outing. The long time participants raised over $2,200 this year and are already planning to ride again next year.

Last year Parksville's Big Bike event raised over $17,400 and Qualicum Beach raised $14,600. Last year over 4,000 teams took part across the country, raising $8.4 million for research.
