Coroner confirms identity of man who died in house fire in Nanoose Bay

The investigation of the New Year's Eve blaze continues

B.C. Coroners Service confirmed William George Whitehouse, 59, of Nanoose Bay succumbed to a house fire along Pilot Way New Years Eve.

Oceanside RCMP Cpl. Jesse Foreman said police were called to the 1400 block of Pilot Way at approximately 8 a.m.

"The house was fully engulfed and a man in his late 50s was found dead inside the residence," said Foreman, adding the victim is believed to be the sole occupant of the home.

He said police were called to the scene by neighbours.

Foreman said there were no other injuries as a result of the fire.

The source of the fire remains unknown, but police say it is not deemed suspicious.

Nanoose Bay Volunteer Fire Department fire chief Doug Penny said 18 members responded to the incident but were not able to save the occupant.

The investigation is ongoing.
