Qualicum Beach’s latest crime stats have been released.
On Monday, July 20, Sgt. Stephen Rose of the Oceanside RCMP presented to Parksville city council the quarterly report and statistics (see chart, above) for the Parksville Qualicum Beach region.
During his presentation, he provided a comparison of crime statistics for the town, between Jan. 1 to June 30, over the past three years.
The comparison detailed the most common criminal offenses the Oceanside RCMP deal with in their jurisdiction.
Rose’s report showed that nine of the 16 reported types of offences did not significantly increase or decrease in recent years.
His comparison table showed that assaults in Qualicum decreased by four reports since last year, on par with the figure from 2019.
Motor vehicle accidents were up by four reports when compared to the first half of 2020, although still significantly reduced when compared to the 28 reports of 2019.
Incidents of theft from a motor vehicle showed the most improvement, by far. In 2019, 41 incidents were reported, followed by 40 in 2020. This year, only 12 incidents were reported, a 60 per cent decrease since 2019.
There was also a significant drop in traffic offences, down from 384 to 280.
