Errington Volunteer Fire Department hosting open house Oct. 15

Event runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Errington Volunteer Fire Department (EVFD) will offer up tips on the small, but important, actions everyone can take to keep themselves and those around them safe from fire at an open house on Oct. 15.

The open house, which runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., will raise awareness about the dangers of fire, how to prevent it and how to keep your family safe by creating and practising an escape plan, according to a news release.

It will also include plenty of games and activities, including water hose challenges and fire extinguisher tasks for mini firefighters at EVFD Fire Hall No. 1 (960 Errington Rd.)

The EVFD wants to celebrate people of all ages who learn about home fire escape planning and practice, as well as those who make an effort to keep their property safe from wildfires.

The open house will provide information on how to fire-smart your property, including examples of measures people can implement in their own backyard to lessen the risk of forest fires spreading to fire-prone neighbourhoods.

“The threat of wildfires has not dissipated, despite the arrival of fall, and drought conditions remain,” the release read.

The BC FireSmart Program has resources on fuel management planning, which involves a series of measures that homeowners can carry out to ensure they minimize the risk of contributing to wildfires.

“If more homeowners followed the protocol, the community would be safer,” the release stated.

In the face of an advancing wildfire, a structure with a properly implemented FireSmart Program, in combination with an operational exterior rooftop sprinkler system, has a survival probability of above 90 per cent, according to the release.

EVFD has been serving the community for more than 50 years.
