The Parksville fire hall renovation is coming along nicely on budget and schedule, according to chief Doug Banks.

The three-bay addition is expected to be ready by mid-May. They will then move the trucks into the addition and complete work on the original bays, including adding more office space.

With the structural work complete on the addition they are down to the final electrical, drywall and finishing work.

The site is being leveled for paving and a rainwater garden will be built in the north-west corner.

The city has been working toward the expansion of the 37-year-old building for over a decade.

They purchased neighbouring properties as far back as the early 1990s and secured the final lot in 2005.

City council approved the scaled down, $3 million expansion for the 2010 capital budget, after residents voted down borrowing up to $5.7 million in a referendum.

It adds 370 square metres (4,000 sq.ft.) including new administration and meeting space, improvements to shower facilities and training areas, along with meeting modern environmental and safety standards and allowing for future expansion.
