The Town of Qualicum Beach is adding 30 parking stalls near the intersection of Harlech Road and First Avenue, through a partial closure of Harlech Road.

According to a press release, there is currently a high demand for parking in the area due to two significant construction projects on First Avenue, and this change will convert an underused portion of Harlech Road into an efficient parking layout.

This change will add new parking, facilitate the removal of construction materials from the existing parking areas and eliminate a poorly configured intersection. As this change is not considered permanent, the Town will be using barricades, signs and line painting that can be removed if required in the future. The road and parking configuration will be re-evaluated in 18 months, or as directed by town council.

Costs for the reconfiguration are being shared between Berwick Retirement Communities and the Town of Qualicum Beach.

“This pilot project will address an acute shortage of parking and also evaluate the feasibility of eliminating the problematic Harlech Road and First Avenue intersection,”said Luke Sales, director of planning.

As contributors to the project, Gordon and Chris Denford, Berwick Retirement Communities, said “we at Berwick are thrilled to be joining the Qualicum Beach community. Our partnership with the Town is an indication of our long-term commitment to this extraordinary community.”

The project is currently underway and the parking will be open to the public within a month.
