Parksville city crews have completed a loop connection on the north side of the Parksville Wetlands, nearly 600 metres of the 2.3-kilometre loop.

According to a release issued on March 7, crews have also resurfaced an additional 550 metres of trail for a total of 1.5 kilometres of new and upgraded trail.

“Next steps include restoration work along the trail sides with seeding, plantings and signage requesting people and their pets stay on the trails,” read the release. “More native plant seeds selected from an onsite inventory completed by the Arrowsmith Naturalists in 2019 will occur this week.”

Working with the naturalists, the city will create educational signage, initially on ten plants found in the wetlands to highlight the First Nation usage and to identify characteristics.

In the fall, some trail surfaces will be capped with limestone providing a more durable surface which will make them more accessible to those with mobility issues. Restoration and replanting will continue throughout Parksville’s urban forest areas.
