Parksville in hunt to win paint contest

Visit Benjamin Moore website to vote once a day until June 30

Parksville is one of 100 North American cities in an online competition to win one of 20 main street paint makeovers from Benjamin Moore.

The city is one of five in B.C. in the Main Street Matters contest supported by the paint company and actor Brad Pitt's Make it Right charity.

"This is a great opportunity for the city, we want everyone to make sure they vote each and every day," said Parksville mayor Chris Burger who became aware of the burgeoning social media campaign late last week.

"People are pretty connected now online and there have been other campaigns like this for school playgrounds that have been pretty successful," Burger added.

He suggested that every day that anyone doesn't vote is like a lost vote in what could be a very useful part of the city's downtown revitalization efforts.

"It's a really good initiative and it will bring a lot of good attention to the city," said councillor Peter Morrison, who as liaison to the Parksville Downtown Business Association was an early proponent of the campaign that started May 16.

Benjamin Moore will provide all of the paint and supplies for all the facades along with colour experts to consult on the best choices.

"This investment we're making in communities around North America is core to our business and to who we are," said David Melançon, Chief Marketing Officer of Benjamin Moore. "Main streets make us who we are and we're proud to honour that with this effort."

The other B.C. communities on the short list are Nelson, Kamloops, Penticton and Courtenay.

Visit to vote once a day until the end of June 30.
