Parksville, Nanoose Bay intersections tie for worst in PQB in terms of crashes

Intersections had 15 incidents each in 2021

Two intersections in Parksville and Nanoose Bay tied for top spot as the worst in the PQB area, according to ICBC collision statistics for 2021.

Island Highway at Northwest Bay Road in Nanoose Bay and Island Highway at Morison Avenue and Alberni Highway tied for worst in the area with 15 accidents.

Not far behind was the intersection of Island Highway West and Horne Lake Road, near Qualicum Beach, with 12 crashes, eight of which caused injury or death, the highest in the PQB region.

Accidents at Alberni Highway and Church Road resulted in seven casualties and crashes at Island Highway East and Northwest Bay Road were responsible for six.

The Parksville-Qualicum Beach area intersections with the most crashes in 2021:

1. Island Highway E and Northwest Bay Road (Nanoose Bay) - 15 crashes

2. Alberni Highway and Island Highway West and Morison Ave (Parksville) - 15

3. Horne Lake Road and Island Highway West (Qualicum Beach) - 12

4. Franklins Gull Road and Island Highway East (Parksville) - 11

5. Island Highway E and Northwest Bay Logging Road (Nanoose Bay) - 9

6. Alberni Highway and Church Road (Parksville) - 9

7. Corfield Street and Island Highway East (Parksville) - 8

8. Alberni Highway and Despard Ave (Parksville) - 7

9. Island Highway West and Lee Road (Parksville) - 7

10. Cook Creek Road and Island Highway West (Bowser) - 6

11. Memorial Avenue and Rupert Road (Qualicum Beach) - 6

12. Island Highway East and Kaye Road (Nanoose Bay) - 6

The most crash-prone intersection on Vancouver Island was Island Highway at Aulds Road and Hammond Bay Road in Nanaimo, where 74 crashes were recorded in 2021. It is followed by Trans-Canada Highway at Trunk Road in Duncan (58), Aulds Road and Nanaimo Parkway (54), Blanshard Street at Saanich Road in Saanich (53) and Trans-Canada Highway at Millstream Road and Veterans Memorial Parkway in Langford (52).

As far as crashes resulting in injury or death, two locations topped the Island list with 25 crashes each: the Nanaimo Parkway at Aulds Road, and the Langford intersection of the Trans-Canada Highway, Millstream Road and the Veterans Memorial Parkway.
