Police have extra resources out on the road this Labour Day long weekend.

PARKSVILLE - Oceanside RCMP Staff Sergeant Brian Hunter says there will be more resources and officers out on the streets of Parksville and Qualicum Beach this Labour Day long weekend.

While he said the RCMP is not expecting trouble, they take the precaution of adding resources when more people might find themselves out for a bit of fun.

When asked if the police have any specific plans to enforce the laws this weekend, Hunter said no — just more eyes on the street.

"Our main concern is road safety," he said. "There's no excuse for a collision on a sunny day."

He added that last weekend's rash of crashes (and a truck fire) that closed Highway 19, Highway 19A through Parksville and Highway 4 for short periods of time, is rare, but it does happen, causing a local form of gridlock.

The RCMP across the province, as well, are keeping their eyes out for people who are distracted while driving. So put away those cell phones.
