Members of Arrowsmith Search and Rescue got a rare opportunity to train with the Alberni Valley Rescue Squad on rope rescue procedures.
The joint rope rescue team training was conducted at Little Mountain, near Parksville.
Rope rescue team leader Michael Addiscott from Arrowsmith SAR led a simulated rescue of a climber trapped on a vertical cliff face.
“Search and rescue rope teams are volunteers but are trained and certified to the same stringent standards across the province,” said Addiscott. “We don’t often get the chance to work with other teams.”
Rope specialists are often called to provide assistance to other search and rescue groups.
“Opportunities like this to work with neighbouring teams are of great value,” said Addiscott. “As well as sharing techniques, visiting teams get to train at some of the areas which, unfortunately, have often proven to be common sites for actual rescues.”
With spring bringing better weather and more daylight, search and rescue groups are advising the public to stay safe as they take part in outdoor activities.
