Qualicum Beach emergency prep forum goes early

Events overseas spark rethink on timing

The devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan has put the fear of the Earth’s wrath into Qualicum Beach council, leading them to push forward the date of their next emergency preparedness exercise.

Councillor Kent Becker said he sees the ongoing trauma in Japan as a wakeup call to Qualicum Beach.

“We initially planned to hold our emergency preparedness forum in September, but given the course of events that have transpired in Japan, along with a and a number of other issues such as more violent storms, I’ve had people asking me when we are going to do something,” he said.

“I’m glad to see we are accelerating this and moving it forward.”

The event, to be held at the Civic Centre, is now slated for May 4 and 5, during Emergency Preparedness Week.
