Peter Wams fears the town is planning to remove a large, old tree on Qualicum Beach that serves as a resting place for eagles.
"I was there this morning and there were two eagles sitting there," Wams, a Qualicum Beach resident, told The NEWS last week.
"A dead tree can stand for quite a few years — why take it down?"
The town says it has no current plans to remove the tree, which stands near The Beach Hut.
"One of the significant trees on the waterfront has been deteriorating for a number of years," Luke Sales, Qualicum Beach's director of planning, wrote in an e-mail in response to questions from The NEWS.
"Due to the historical and ecological significance of the tree, the town is hiring a specialist to evaluate its health and structural integrity to determine whether any action is required."
"Until this evaluation has taken place, no decisions will be made about the tree."
