The Regional District of Nanaimo is alerting residents about an ongoing scam.

The RDN received notice from a resident who was called by an individual posing as a regional district representative. They proceeded to tell the resident that they owed money for solid waste curbside collection carts.

The RDN does not charge residents for curbside carts, and service fees are only collected directly by the RDN or through municipal partner utility bills.

The resident followed the RDN’s recommended course of action, which is to hang up and call the RDN directly. Residents are advised not provide credit card or other personal information unless you have initiated a call to the RDN. Residents may also report suspicious calls to the RCMP or the anti-fraud line at 1-888-495-8501.

The public can contact the RDN with questions about services or other matters at 250-390-4111, toll-free at 1-877-607-4111 or inquiries@rdn.bc.ca.
