Qualicum town council gave permission to the Heart and Stroke Foundation to hold their Big Bike event.
The Big Bike event, which raises money for the foundation, will be held in Qualicum Beach on Tuesday, June 7.
• Town staff in Qualicum Beach are getting ready to draw up a draft policy about public use of the Heritage Forest. The move comes in response to a request from the Brown Property Preservation Society and will be reviewed by council at their May 5 meeting.
• Knowing there is intense community interest in the OCP, councillors this week agreed to relocate the April 18 council meeting to the Qualicum Beach Civic Centre for a special public hearing on the Official Community Plan.
• The Town of Qualicum Beach will take part in Local Government Awareness Week, from May 15 to 22, working with schools to organize activities such as a poster contest, photo contest, tours and displays.
• Fire crews in Qualicum Beach responded to 16 medical aid calls in March. They also dealt with six false alarms, three motor vehicle incidents, one chimney fire and a structural fire. They were also kept busy putting on the eighth fire camp, which allows high school students to learn about what’s involved in fire fighting.
• The town’s bylaw officer stepped up his beach patrols over the past month in an effort to make sure migrating Brant geese are able to feed in peace. Over the course of 107 patrols in March, 31 violations were noted, 21 of which were dealt with through violation notices. Bylaw officer Don Marshall noted all dog owners complied immediately when informed of the canine beach ban.
