What's happening around the Qualicum council table

Council briefs

• Town council this week gave permission to organizers of the St. Mark’s Fair to close Veterans’ Way at Memorial Avenue for the event, slated for July 23.

• Because the Qualicum Beach Farmer’s Market usually holds their Saturday event at Veterans’ Way on the day of St. Mark’s Fair, council agreed to allow them to locate the market on Fir Street for that day only.

• They may be shut out of funding from the federal govenrment, but the Parksville/KAIROS group is getting some support on the municipal level. This week, council agreed with a staff recommendation to grant permission for the group’s social justice committee to hold a World Water Day event on March 19.

• The parking lot beside TOSH will once again be a buzzing hive of activity this year, after council agreed to give permission for Larry and Dee Aguilar to operate an artisan’s market on Friday evenings from July 1 to Aug. 19.

• During the month of January the Qualicum Beach Volunteer Fire Department dealt with 39 calls for service, including 24 for medical aid, five false alarms, four motor vehicle incidents, one structural fire, one electrical fire, one vandalism fire and one chimney fire. They also dealt with one carbon monoxide incident.

• Bylaw officer Don Marshall has increased his patrols on the Dollymount Trail because of an increase in reports of dogs being off their leashes in the area.

He noted dogs must be leashed at all times when off the owner’s property, unless they are on a designated off-leash area.
