Ethel Mae Whibley (nee Godkin)

Born August, 5, 1929, in Miami, Manitoba

Passed peacefully on November, 22, 2013.

At Nanaimo Regional General Hospital in the comfort

of her sons and daughter.

Mom was the 8th of 9 children, growing up in the time of horses, dog sleds and shoes, when you had them. The Godkin family moved from Manitoba to Chemainus in ‘43 where they still maintain a large presence. Mom met and married Dad in 1955, building a home in Ladysmith and starting a family. One final move in 1971 brought us all to the vibrant community of Coombs.

Suffering from FMS (“Fear Of Missing Something”), Mom was soon involved with numerous community events, Coombs Bluegrass being a favourite. She loved making new friends and never forgetting old ones. Family was most important though often it was hard to tell one from the other for friends, quite often, became family. Her grandkids where a large part of Mom’s life. Mom always knew exactly what they were up to even if we didn’t.

Lots of people live, but a rare few are so “alive”.

Mom, Gramma, Auntie Ethel, lived life with genuine pleasure.

Predeceased by husband Al (2011), son Dan (1977), and most recently, grandson Lukas (2013). Survived by sons Lorne (Roong), Gary (Sally), Terry Whibley, and daughter Sheila (Charlie) Pickard; Grandchildren Dan (Zenaida), Wayne (Sandy), Logan (Taryn), Garrett, Ian and Marie; Sisters Evelyn and Margaret, brothers Roy and Lorne.

A celebration of life will be held at the Bradley Center in Coombs,

December 1 at 1:30 pm

In lieu of flower, donations to the BC Children’s Hospital, the Lukas Whibley Memorial Sports Bursary c/o Ballenas Secondary School, (or the casino of your choice) would all honour Mom’s memory.
