After a brief illness Gloria/Nana passed away on June 8, 2012 at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital. A cherished and loved mother, Nana, sister and friend to many, she will be deeply missed by all so fortunate to know her. Her cheerful, friendly and optimistic nature made her a pleasure to be around. A long time resident of the Eaglecrest area of Qualicum Beach, Gloria was predeceased by her husband Gordon in 1991. Nontheless, she remained active and continued to enjoy her community and many friends in the neighborhood.

Although she only started to play golf in her mid-50s her passion for it never diminished and we are so grateful that she got in a couple of “rounds” before falling ill. It was a perfect sport for Gloria because it combined several of her most favorite activities -- fashion, friends and socializing, and of course fish and chip Fridays at the Eaglecrest Golf Club. She was an active member of the Probus and the Eaglecrest Garden Clubs. Prior to her retirement, she worked for many years part-time at the Qualicum Pharmasave. She enjoyed traveling, whether locally with friends, or to New York City and other destinations with her son John. Gloria had a wonderful sense of humour and very much enjoyed and participated in the humour of others. Gloria loved her family and was always so proud of their accomplishments big or small. We will miss her terribly!

Gloria was born and raised in Victoria by her parents Sid and Ada (nee Lock) Horsford. She attended Victoria High School and during the war years she worked as a cashier at the Empress Hotel. She and Gordon were married in 1944 in Victoria although they spent much of their married life in Lynn Valley, North Vancouver prior to Gordon’s retirement to Qualicum Beach in the mid-1970s.

She is survived by her son John, (Lynn) and grandsons Scott and Ryan and a sister Barbara Lockhart all of Victoria, BC. The care and caring for Gloria by the nursing and medical staff on the 4th. Floor of the Nanaimo Regional General Hospital is sincerely appreciated.

In lieu of flowers we know she would prefer instead, if you are so inclined, to consider a donation to the Community Living Victoria Foundation or a charity of your choice in her name.

A service to celebrate Gloria’s life will be held on June 15, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at Yates Funeral Home, 1000 Allsbrook Road, Parksville, BC (250 248 5859). A reception will follow.

YATES FUNERAL SERVICE & CREMATORIUM (250-248-5859) in care of arrangements.
