June 2, 1931 - March 31, 2022
In loving memory ~
John A. H. Macdonald, known to his friends as "John A.," passed away peacefully on March 31 at Stanford Seniors Village in Parksville, BC, aged 90.
John was born on June 2, 1931, on Minstrel Island, BC to Ida Dorothy Macdonald (nee Halliday) and John Errington Macdonald. He and his younger sisters, Betsy and Frances, were raised nearby, just outside of Kingcome Inlet.
After a few years in forestry, John enjoyed a 31-year career as a fisheries officer. This work took him to Rivers Inlet, Bella Bella, Kitimat, and finally Parksville-Qualicum. His deep knowledge of and love for nature extended far beyond his work; he was also an avid hiker, canoer, camper, and gardener, especially in his retirement. He enjoyed foraging for wild berries and mushrooms, and he could always give you an answer to "what's that tree?" He was a talented photographer and woodworker, and he always won at Scrabble and Trivial Pursuit.
John was a loving and devoted husband to Julia (nee Bucknell) Macdonald for 51 years, and he was a caring and patient father to Catherine (50) and Ian (48). He had a deep and quiet faith, and he gave many years of service to his church. John's gentleness, honesty, and grateful approach to life will live long in the memories of those who love him.
John is survived by his wife, Julia, daughter Catherine, son, Ian, and sister, Betsy. He is predeceased by his sister, Frances.
A memorial service will be held at St. Anne's/St. Edmund's Anglican Church in Parksville, at a date and time to be determined.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to St. Anne's/St. Edmund's.
