Hargrove, John Frederick
(Sept. 21, 1916 - July 18, 2005)
Born in St. John Newbrunswick, came to North Vancouver in 1931, then moved to the
Parksville area with his family in 1963. Predeceased by his first wife Grayce, his parents
Bristall and Sarah Hargrove, brother William Hargrove, and sisters Vivian Jones and Vera
Kittson.
He is survived and lovingly remembered by wife Jean of Parksville and by brothers
George, James and Arnold (Iris) Hargrove, daughter Pat (John) Gillespie of Coombs, son
John (Janet) Hargrove of Qualicum, stepdaughters Jackie, Laurel, Gerry, Barbara, stepson
Charlie, grandchildren Shona (Chris) Jackson, Neil Gillespie, Katrina Hargrove, Owen
Hargrove, Merrilee Hargrove, great grandchildren Trystan and William Jackson, many
nieces, nephews and friends.
Big John was a strong, gentle and kind man. A former championship wrestler, a
commercial fisherman, a boat builder and carpenter. In his retired years he embarked on a
trip with a group of seniors to cycle Australia and returned with many stories and enduring
friendships.
In recent times he enjoyed cribbage games and visiting family and friends, the Times
Colonist crossword, mystery novels and the frequent visits from home care workers.
