February 28, 1932 - December 11, 2019
Kenneth (Ken) Hindmarch, dearly beloved husband of Nancy (nee Lyttback), passed away peacefully on December 11, 2019 at the age of 87.
Ken was a graduate in mining engineering from the University of British Columbia. He spent most of his work life in the oil and gas industry. Ken's career as a professional engineer was largely built over 32 years with Shell Canada Limited. Various positions Ken held with Shell took him to many parts of the United States as well as to Holland. He influenced the development of many professional lives and was widely respected by peers and co-workers. Ken formed many lifetime friendships with people he worked with, a testament not only to his presence on the job but the ways in which he conducted himself in others' presence. Before retiring to Qualicum Beach, Ken spent the last few years of his work life in the public service of the Government of British Columbia.
Nancy was the love of Ken's life. It was and will remain rare to speak of one without the other and opportunities to spend time with them together invariably allowed friends, neighbours and family members to witness the abiding love, mutual respect and good humour that characterized their relationship. The genuine interest in and kindnesses shown by Ken and Nancy to all people who crossed their paths serve as exemplars of how to go about living.
Ken was predeceased by his parents Sam and Agnes Hindmarch and sister Carol Abrahams. In addition to wife Nancy, Ken is survived by two loving sons Rick (Maureen) and Dale. Ken's grandchildren have been busy extending the Hindmarch family in recent years. Shannon (Michael) MacDonald gave Ken and Nancy two great granddaughters (Cadha and Amara). Aubrie is Ken and Nancy's great granddaughter from Brent (Whitney) Hindmarch. Jackson, the most recent arrival, is the son of Sean (Megan) Hindmarch and Ken and Nancy's first great grandson. Ken also leaves behind many members of the Abraham and Zurawski families, all of whom cherish time they spent with him. He also had a wonderful relationship with the FitzGerald family whose members looked up to him as a father figure.
Ken's love and respect for nature and the enjoyment he derived from being outdoors were reflected in his love for hunting, fishing and hiking. Travel was often involved in the pursuit of these activities and allowed Ken and Nancy to spend many winters in Yuma while in retirement. Ken also enjoyed golf and played into his eighties.
From Ken, so many people learned so many things - about the natural world, the business world and navigating life in general. Ken's only granddaughter perhaps put it best: "he is the smartest person I knew".
Nancy is left to carry on Ken's legacy with the support of her family. Ken's memory - and the memories they made as life partners and in loving their family so dearly - will surely help her do so.
