February 21, 2010

PATON, Leslie MacDonald

died at Qualicum Manor in Qualicum Beach on February 21, 2010 after a brief illness. He was born in Thorhild, Alberta on October 27, 1918 and resided in Alberta all his life until retiring to Vancouver Island with the love of his life, Pearl, in 1983. Les is survived by his loving wife, Pearl, daughters Kathy (Don), Barb, Jan, and Laurie (Norman), and son Rob (Dianna). He was pre-deceased by sons Keith in 1973 and Roland in 1990. He will also be remembered by his grandchildren Randy, Kerry (David), Tami (Mike), Chris (Karen), Angie (Jeff), Leanne; and great grandchildren Ashly, Kyle, Jake, Matthew and Jocelyn.

Les served with the Royal Canadian Air Force in WWII and remained close to his special air force buddies for many years following the war. He was the last surviving member of that group. He loved sports being an avid golfer until age 86 and was inducted into the Lethbridge Sports Hall of Fame for his work developing Little League baseball in that city. He was a Royal Banker for some forty-two years and proudly celebrated his thirty-first year of retirement last year.

His life was devoted to his family & friends, his work, and his church. Les was proud to tell people that his mother first took him to All Saints Cathedral (Edmonton) in October of 1924 and he had attended the Anglican church ever since. A memorial service was held at St. Mark’s Anglican Church on February 24th.

Sincere thanks to the staffs of Hawthorne Place and more recently Qualicum Manor for their care and kindness to Les and Pearl.
