LOIS HAYES
September 18, 1936 ~ June 15, 2015
Lois was born in Landis, Saskatchewan and lived her pre-school years in Kinistino, Saskatchewan until the family moved to Saskatoon in 1943. School years were in Buena Vista and Nutana Collegiate. Lois graduated with a B.Ed. from the U. of S. in 1960. Her teaching career was in Calgary with the Calgary Board of Education in elementary schools. Her husband, Sam, (Simeon), was an administrator with the CBE. They married in Saskatoon and raised a family in Calgary until retirement. Then they moved to Qualicum Beach in 1994. Travels took them to the places they wanted to see; always grateful to return to their island home.
With a keen interest in Fine Arts/Performing Arts, Lois took piano and flute lessons in her younger years. She was interested in Dance and Art forms. She spent one summer at the Banff School of Fine Arts, studying theater and stagecraft. Lois participated in high school operettas and in a University operetta. Music was her first love and she was grateful for the opportunity to perform with the Vancouver Island Opera, in most of its well-known productions.
Survived by her husband, Sam Hayes; son John (Drazenka) Hayes; grandchildren Joshua and Adrianna, of Sunnyvale, CA; daughter Stephanie (Glenn Kennedy) Stillinger, grandchildren Emma and Jonathan, of Calgary; cousins Brenda (Wayne) Wallace of N.H., Margo (Joe) Sinardi of Burlington; Mark Phoenix and Robyn (Ian) Dean of Tobermory; cousins Gary (Terri) Chappell in Saskatoon and Brian Chappell in Calgary; sister-in-law Marj (Barry) Stewart of Duncan, BC; brother-in-law Paul (Debbie) Zahayko of High River, AB. Predeceased by her brother, Norman in 1960; and parents Merv (1995) and Norine (1988) Chappell of Victoria, BC.
She volunteered at the Village Theatre, and sang with the Knox choir. Her hobbies were photography, golf, participation in a writing group, and fitness groups. Lois valued education; she saw it as a life-long journey.
