September 30, 2018
After an unexpected diagnosis of lung cancer in late July, Norm died peacefully in Palliative Care at Nanaimo General Hospital on September 30, with his family by his side. He is survived by his loving wife of 24 years: Diane and her son/his stepson, Jon Challoner, his daughters, Kelly (John) and Kirsten (Guy), his beautiful grandchildren, James, Ayla, Jacob, Will and Chloe, his sister Lynne (Dave), as well as extended family and friends.
Norm was born and raised in Vancouver where he was a teacher, principal and school board administrator before moving to Vancouver Island to build his own home in the quiet countryside of Coombs. Norm was a much-admired instructor in the Education Faculty of Malaspina University College (now Vancouver Island University) from the early 90s until his retirement in 2004.
Norm is remembered as an attentive, loving husband, a beloved dad, an enthusiastic Grampa, and a very kind, charming and gentle man with a wealth of knowledge, a quick wit and, always, a positive attitude. As a great woodworker, traveller, BBQ’er, mixologist, storyteller, model railroader, lover of all musical genres (particularly of Jon’s trumpet performances) and all things cultural and historical, Norm has left a tremendous void in our lives.
We extend our gratitude to Dr. Geller of the BC Cancer Agency in Victoria and to Dr. Hickey-Somerville of the Parksville Medical Clinic.
A celebration of Norm’s life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Vancouver Children’s Hospital or to the Qualicum Beach Honours Society would be gratefully accepted.
