June 6, 1923 ~ April 24, 2009

It is with great sorrow we announce the passing of our beloved mother Patricia Smith of daughters Susan and Wendy (Bruce) on April 24, 2009. Predeceased by her loving and devoted husband of 53 years, Edwin (Ted) in December 2008, her sisters Elizabeth (or Betty) Baldwin and Barbara (Doug) Galt.

Pat was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba June 6, 1923, the second of three daughters of Colonel Archibald and Marjorie Hunt. Growing up in Winnipeg, Pat’s passions included figure skating, tennis, dancing, equestrian jumping and playing piano all of which she excelled at. She was a proud graduate of Havergal College in Toronto. After the war, Pat moved to Victoria where she met and married Ted. It was here where they settled and raised their two girls. Pat took great pride in training, grooming and showing her English Cocker Spaniels many of which earned Canadian championships. Her love of dogs was not confined to purebreds as was evident by her passion for rescuing strays. Ted and Pat built a vacation cottage in Qualicum on the beach. Here they loved to entertain, swim and play golf and bridge. Known as “The hostess with the mostess” not just for her culinary flair, but also for her impish playfulness and infectious laughter. In 1985, they retired to Qualicum where they continued to enjoy their gregarious lifestyle entertaining family and friends with G & T’s and Dubonet. When the serving of coffee and liquors was done, Patsy was known to “tickle the ivories” with her gifted touch.

Patricia will be sadly missed and is survived by brothers-in law Jack Baldwin, Vincent and Gilbert (Margaret) Smith, sister-in-law Donna Smith, sister and brother-in-law Hilda and John Archibald, many nieces and nephews, longtime friends and acquaintances.

With much gratitude, we thank the staff of Eagle Park Care Facility for their compassionate care of our mother while she “fought the brave fight” battling Alzheimers.

A celebration of life will be held at the family home, 1195 Butterball Drive, Qualicum Beach on Saturday June 6, 2009 at 1 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer’s Society or the SPCA would be greatly appreciated.
