Tsutomu (Tom) Yoshida

October 27, 2013

1923-2013

Tom Yoshida passed away peacefully at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Comox, BC on October 27. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Tsuyuko (Suki); children Sharon (Ken) Mould, Sandra (Grant) Kerr, Richard, Ron, and Lois Yoshida (Jeff Butterworth); grandchildren Shauna Kerr (Ken Laroque), Joel Kerr (Marie-Claire Durand), Rachelle Kerr (Jay Flaman), and Kieran Keily; cousin Nick Yoshida of Toronto; and Eddie (Janice) Ohama of Kamloops.

Born in Vancouver, BC, Tom spent his childhood in Tofino and his high school years in Vancouver. Tom, Suki and his father moved to Japan for a brief time after the war. He moved to Saskatoon and then settled in Regina, working first at Keith Consulting as a surveyor, then at Sask Power where he was one of the first to work with computers.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting, curling, and gardening, and was also active in Broadway United Church and the Regina Japanese Canadian Club. He & Suki retired to Qualicum Beach in 1989 and became involved with St. Stephen’s United Church and were avid bridge players.

Until the move to Courtenay, Tom gardened and tended his numerous fruit trees. He also enjoyed carpet bowling and was on the team that won 3 consecutive championships at the Provincial Senior Games (2007-2009).

Always a thinker, Tom was an honourable man of a quiet demeanour, and was a wonderful friend, husband, father, and grandfather. He will be missed.
