August 14, 1923 - March 30, 2011

Wally, 87, passed away suddenly at home. He is survived by his wife Glenna Lorraine Reid, daughter Cherryl Anne Halbert, sons Thomas Dale Slater (Joke), Glen Arthur Slater (Jill), grandchildren Lorreena Shaw (Roland), Robert Halbert (Lori), Trevor Slater (Linda), Phillip Slater (Shannon), Jeffery Slater (Agnes), great-grandchildren David and Daniel Shaw, Dustin Halbert, Darian and Kelley Slater, McKenna and Avery Slater, sister Marion (Art) Shama, nieces and nephews Barry Shama, Robert Shama, Elizabeth Carter, Marilyn Clarke, Maureen Bundy, Michael Clarke and Marlene Willock. He was predeceased by his sister Barbara (Cliff) Clarke and son-in-law Bob Halbert.

Wally was born and raised in Victoria where he began his career in the Automotive Industry. He served in the Canadian Armed Forces during WWII in Jamaica. On his return to Victoria he was Service Manager at Chrysler then Shop Foreman for Saanich. Wally was President of the Victoria Optimist Club and a member of the Legion. In 1973 Wally and Lorraine purchased Shawnigan Garage and worked there until they retired to Parksville in 1986. Never one to sit still, he spent endless hours in his workshop handcrafting wooden toys for the enjoyment of children world wide. Wally would go out of his way to help others and could fix most things with his magic fingers. Wally was very much loved by his family and friends. We will miss him always.

A Reception was held at Yates Funeral Home, 1000 Allsbrook Rd Parksville BC on Wednesday April 6, 2011. A private interment will be held at a later date.
