Four councillors not enough for Qualicum Beach

We have had a few tumultuous years in our local councils, most notably in Qualicum Beach. I believe this could be addressed, at least to some extent, by electing a council composed of a mayor and six councillors. This would give a broader opinion base and spread the workload.

We have had a few tumultuous years in our local councils, most notably in Qualicum Beach. I believe this could be addressed, at least to some extent, by electing a council composed of a mayor and six councillors. This would give a broader opinion base and spread the workload.

Local government legislation states that a town is to consist of a mayor and four councillors (unless otherwise established by bylaw), however, it also defines a town as having a population of between 2,500 and 5,000 residents. And although we choose to remain a town in name, the current population of Qualicum Beach exceeds 9,000. To increase the number of council members, this council must state their intention six months before the next election, at which time the ratepayers will have a vote. Any extra expense would be minimal if the same salary budget were split six ways.

These are difficult times in so many ways. Let us do what we can to gain harmony and build a stronger, caring community.
