LETTER: Car show fantastic, burnouts not so much

‘Dangerous exhibitions of raw power’ are not needed

I personally think the Seaside Cruizers, the RCMP, Qualicum Beach and Parksville are just asking for trouble and setting themselves up for a serious accident and certain lawsuits, by allowing certain individuals to do burnouts through residential areas, specifically my community of Eaglecrest.

I was part of the collector car hobby for many years, and participated in many parades with my car, and this is the only area where those burnouts are allowed in such close proximity to the many residents lining the parade route, with some in lawn chairs and little children, as close as 10 feet from the cars.

I enjoy as much as anyone watching a car parade, and the vast array of collector cars is truly inspiring, and that includes the rumble of a high-powered muscle car or hot rod.

I realize that burnouts are encouraged by some of the spectators, but all it takes is a over zealous showoff, a stuck throttle, or mechanical failure to spell disaster.

These burnouts could be done in a controlled and safe environment, such as a parking lot that is fenced properly, as is done in some of the car shows I have attended.

I certainly hope that this popular Father’s Day weekend event can continue, but without these dangerous exhibitions of raw power.
