What Regional District of Nanaimo director Joe Stanhope called preventable is correct. But let’s not have a knee-jerk reaction.
First of all, new subdivisions should have sidewalks. If Roberton Boulevard would have had these, this would not have happened.
Excessive speed was not an issue here, but that stupid traffic-calming island narrowed the road so much that it does not leave room for vehicles and pedestrians.
When I talked to Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure people years ago, I was told that they did not require sidewalks. Well, it only takes the highways minister to say from this day forward all new subdivisions will have sidewalks at least on one side.
Also, although this was not the case here, pedestrians do have a responsibility to look after themselves. Some do not take charge of their own safety. They walk in dark clothing with no lights or reflectors — same goes for bike riders. Please enjoy your walk or ride. Be safe.
