From the Qualicum Beach & District Curling Club comes word 13 teams of curlers ranging in age from 8-17 from Oceanside, Nanaimo, Courtenay and Campbell River, took to the local ice Dec.  1 for a Junior Bonspiel.

“Amid a lot of excitement there were some great shots made,” reports QBDCC’s Eileen Leachman, pointing out that in the end, it was an all-QB Novice A Event final, with Tyler Wiersma, William Roberts and Cam Hunter edging out Christian Geiger, Ethan Stewart, Hayden Roach and Alex Hunter in a close 3-1 game.

According to Leachman, “five of these curlers started curling this October, and Alex started the week before the event, so big congratulations to them all.”

The Novice B Event was won by the Courtenay/Comox team skipped by Brier Pilon with the Parksville Boys — Devon O’Rourke, Logan Basara, William Burnham, and Graham Dorsay — runners up.

The competitive event was won by the Stoyles team from Campbell River, with the Smith team from Qualicum/Nanaimo — Emily Smith, Lauren McIntosh, Keelin Fines and Shanya Wheat — taking second.

The Competitive Skills Event was also won by the Stoyles Team with the Smith team placing second.

According to Leachman, QBDCC has 14 junior curlers this year.

“This is the only junior bonspiel we will host this year,” she said, “but some of our curlers will go to other clubs on the Island.”
