One point in three games was all the Save-On-Foods Oceanside Generals could get this weekend.
Although they lost all three games, the Generals are still in the hunt for the final playoff spot and are now nine points behind the Saanich Braves.
Liam Giroux was solid in net once again for the Generals as he faced 49 shots on Sunday, managing to stop 45 of them but ended up with the loss against the Comox Valley Glacier Kings.
Wyatt Meiers couldn’t connect on an outlet pass to Chase Gaudreault and it resulted in Comox getting the winner just 30 seconds into overtime. The Generals managed to get the single point for getting to OT and moved that much closer to that final playoff spot.
It was a quick start for the Generals against Comox, much like it was on Saturday night against Campbell River. The Gens opened the scoring in both games as Gaudreault, a 17-year-old out of Port Alberni, lit the lamp just 40 seconds into the game against Comox Valley on Sunday.
The Generals took a 1–0 lead into the second period where Comox got on the board, scoring two for a 2–1 lead. With the Glacier Kings poised to take that lead into the third, Connor McNary had other ideas as the Orlando, Florida native sniped one top corner from the face-off dot to tie it up with just 15 seconds to go in the second period.
Comox took the lead back on the power play just under seven minutes into the third but Brodie Smith answered back on a nice effort that was setup by Nate Fitzpatrick and Travis Flug to knot it at 3–3.
It wasn’t meant to be on Sunday for the Generals though as Comox managed to get the win early into the OT.
The Gens were shorthanded this game as defenceman Ryan White was injured Saturday night and Chandler Bruyckere, also a defenceman, has moved on to play hockey in El Paso, Texas. That left the Gens with just four defenceman in the lineup on Sunday.
“It was a little tough but it was nice too because it kept us in the game. I think it worked out pretty well for the four of us, we played pretty well together out there,” McNary said about being short handed against Comox.
Saturday night the Generals hosted the Campbell River Storm and ended up losing that one 5–2. Smith opened the scoring 31 seconds into the game in this one and Liam Peel added the second goal for the Gens on the night, a power play marker off a nice cross–ice feed from Smith.
“It’s always nice to put one in the net. It gave me a boost of confidence heading into today (Sunday) and helped out especially with just the four defencemen in the lineup too,” Liam Peel said of his goal Saturday night.
The Generals are back in action Thursday in Nanaimo to take on the Buccaneers. On Friday they head down island to face the Kerry Park Islanders and Saturday are back at home to host the Peninsula Panthers, puck drop at 7:30 p.m. at Oceanside Place.
