Generals gearing up for season with fundraiser

The Save-On-Foods Oceanside Generals are a busy bunch this weekend, including an important fundraiser Saturday.

The Save-On-Foods Oceanside Generals are a busy bunch this weekend, as the local Jr. B team plays three exhibition games in three days, with an important fundraiser Saturday.

The Gens host Comox Valley (7:30 p.m. Friday) in their pre-season home opener. Admission is free.

The Generals are back at Oceanside Place Saturday evening to host the Nanaimo Buccaneers and to raise money for the new Lukas Whibley Memorial Scholarship Fund, and on Sunday they travel to Comox for a 2:30 p.m. start.

All proceeds from Saturday’s game, including the suggested $5 admission and any funds raised in the silent auction, goes directly to the memorial fund.

“We’re hoping to see the stands full Saturday night,” Oceanside Generals Hockey Club secretary Elizabeth Cudmore said this week. “It’s a perfect opportunity for the community to help support the team and to donate to the memorial fund set up in honour of Lukas.”

“We’re looking forward to playing, to seeing how we match up,” Gens’ head coach and GM Brent Demerais said. “We’ve had some guys missing at Jr. A camps but we’ve been working pretty hard and I think we’ll do fine.”

The silent auction gets underway at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.

The two teams will be welcomed to the ice at 7:28 p.m. with introductions and a moment of silence.

For those unable to make Saturday’s game, a heads up “you don’t have to be present to win,” so those driving by can still stop in and donate, make a bid and still be eligible.

Anyone can make a donation at PostNet on the Alberni Hwy.
