KSS golf team starts season impressively

Last year’s provincial champions start new season by earning top two spots at tourney

The Kwalikum Secondary golf team was in the groove last week as they took the top two spots in their first tournament of the season.

Played  over 18 holes at Qualicum Memorial Golf Course, the Kondors fielded two teams, which placed first and second out of the six schools in action.

KSS 1 had four players while KSS 2 had three members from KSS teaming up with two from Cedar, who were short handed at the tournament.

Teams usually carry five players but the Kondors had enough for two four-player teams.

“Anytime we can get under 300 as a team, that’s a good round for everyone involved,” coach Butch Gayton said.

“Masato (Wilson) didn’t have the greatest round, which was abnormal for him and Anthony Trozzo had a real good round, which was nice to see. Everyone was right where they should be early in the season so we’ll only get better from here on in.”

KSS 1 came in with a round of 297. Wilson (80), Santiago Bourya (70), Scott Lemon (72), and Cole Morrison (75) were all part of team one and scored under 300, which is a great thing in team play, said Gayton.

Team Two finished with a round of 301 with Trozzo (69) shooting the lowest round out of all the golfers in the field.

Blair Steward (78) and Michelle Waters (80) rounded out the scoring for the Kondors on Team Two.

With the first tournament of the season in the books for the defending provincial champions, the Kondors golf team is headed to Port Alberni next for a tournament at the Alberni Golf Club in Cherry Creek.

“It was nice to finish first and second in the first event of the season for us,” Gayton said.

“Always good to kick off the season, especially being defending champions, with a good showing. There’s a reason why these kids won the provincials last year and they’re going to be right in the thick of it all again this year.”
