Drey Dixon, a senior guard from Kwalikum Secondary School, was named the Most Outstanding Player after guiding the North to a 79-71 win over the South in the 30th annual Vancouver Island Seniors Classic high-school all-star basketball games at the University of Victoria Saturday, April 8.
Kate Reynolds, a Ballenas Secondary senior, took a break from her current duties with the Whalers’ senior girls soccer team to contribute to the North’s 89-88 thriller over the South in the girls all-star contest. Her Ballenas teammate, Makayla Hoey, was also on the North girls roster.
Dixon, whose regular season with the North Island champion Kondors was disrupted by injury, scored a game-high 15 points as the North prevailed in the boys ‘B’ contest.
In the boys ‘A’ game the South romped to a wild, 113-89 win over the North. Liviano Canil of Ballenas was selected to a spot on the North ‘A’ squad.
There was only one girls game in the all-star series. Reynolds scored 14 points, second-best for the North, in its white-knuckled, one-point win over the South.
The All-Star Classic, billed as B.C.’s longest-running all-star showcase, is designed to feature the top graduating basketball players from schools across Vancouver Island. This year’s event drew players from schools ranging from Class A to AAAA, from Campbell River and Ucluelet to Victoria.
