The turnout was regrettably low, but the competition was fierce as Qualicum Beach Lawn Bowling Club hosted the 2017 Vancouver Island Indoor Ladies Singles playdowns Saturday and Sunday.

Local bowler Dawn Rigg emerged from the four-woman competition holding the Island trophy and a ticket to represent the zone in the 2017 B.C. Provincial Ladies Singles championship next month in Vancouver.

A larger turnout is expected this weekend as the men take their turn on the Qualicum Beach indoor green in the Men’s Singles playdowns.

Last weekend, Rigg outlasted Parksville’s Merry Danarti in a hotly contested final to claim the Island title.

Bobbi Charlton of Victoria topped Leone King, another Qualicum Beach bowler, in the 3rd-4th-place final.

Spectators are welcome to drop by the club at 665 Jones St. to check out this weekend’s men’s singles tournament, another qualifier for the B.C. Provincial Championships. Games will be contested throughout the day Saturday and continue Sunday, with the final scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
