PARKSVILLE — From Oceanside Minor Baseball president Mike Parlow comes word the local rep boys of summer will be taking to the field at their respective provincial championships this weekend.

According to Parlow, the Mosquitos took the hard road to the B.C.s at their zone playdowns in Ladysmith last weekend as they gave up a big lead late in the game and settled for a tie against Port Alberni, then had to dig deep for a crucial win over Salt Spring to grab the third and final berth to the provincials, which run this weekend in Surrey.

Oceanside’s Peewee Reds were in Courtenay recently for their four-team zone finals with the top two teams advancing.

After a disappointing start against the heavily favoured Comox Valley squad, the Reds rallied to mercy both Nanaimo and Duncan to clinch the silver medal and “a spot in the big show.”

“Both teams are in tough, but once the tournament starts anything can happen,” said Parlow. The Peewees are playing really well and if you look at the roster, it’s pretty much the same bunch that won the silver medal ... back in 2009. The Mosquitos are also a very talented group — if they can pull it together and play up to their skill level as a team, I like their chances.”
