The Parksville Lawn Bowling Club opened last weekend with Mayor Chris Burger delivering the first bowl of the 2014 season.

The pitch was busy all weekend as members took part in their first tournament of the season on Sunday. Saturday marked the official opening and members played after Burger’s opening shot.

“It’s going to be an exciting year for the club once again,” said spokesperson Carol Bucyk.

“We always have a great time, regardless of the weather. Not only that but we’re hosting the Canadian National Mixed Pairs Championship in September as well, so everyone is gearing up for a big year here.”

On Sunday, the club held the Mixed Triples Opening Tournament under ominous skies. Thirty-two teams came out to play with sixteen in the early draw and sixteen in the later draw. After the dust had settled, six teams were victorious.

Early draw winners:

First place: team of Art Ferguson (skip), Dave Perry and Terri Chapell. Second: Markey Pellow (skip), Merry Danarti and Peter Zboyovsky. Third:  Dave Muir (skip), Barry Conn and Olga Quinlan.

Late draw:

First place: Alan Brunskill (skip), Vicky Banks and Anne Gibson. Second: Joe Stemler (skip) Kathleen Arthorne and Chuck Benson. Third:  Gil Simpson (skip), Lucille Picard and Bros Brosnikoff.
