A reminder to swimmers and spectators alike that this Sunday marks the 55th running of the Qualicum Beach Ocean Mile Swim.

“Everyone enjoys this event whether they are in the water swimming or on shore cheering,” Qualicum Beach mayor Teunis Westbroek stated in a media release.

Westbroek plans to swim the event this year, something he has done in the past.

“This is truly an all-ages event with a wonderful history — we applaud all participants who take part,” he said.

The Qualicum Beach Ocean Mile Swim “provides a great opportunity for people of all ages to be active on a beautiful stretch of beach and to experience a strong sense of community,” said Reg Nosworthy, chair of the District 69 Recreation Commission, adding, “staff from the Regional District of Nanaimo’s recreation department have assisted with the swim for many years, and I am pleased to see the popularity of this annual event.”

The event is open to swimmers of all ages. There is no cost to participate, however registration is required. Registration runs from 1 to 2:45 p.m. at the beach near the boat ramp and the Beach Hut restaurant and concession.

The race begins at 3 p.m., and swimmers travel a well-marked loop totalling one mile and return to the Beach Hut start area. Awards are presented at approximately 4:30 p.m. or shortly after the final swimmers come in.

Medals are awarded in each of the events’ 13 prize categories. Winner’s names are added to trophies on display at the Ravensong Aquatic Centre in Qualicum Beach.
