The Ballenas Whalers senior girls soccer team are heading to the North Islands on May 5-6 in Powell River after finishing first in their league.
The Whalers, who play in a condensed mid–Island league, finished first and will be playing two games prior to the North Islands.
Last week the Whalers finished fourth out of 16 teams at the Carihi Investors Tournament in Campbell River.
Winning three games and losing just one, the fourth place finish came for the Whalers out of 16 teams.
“We had a bit of a shorter season but we ended up coming in first,” head coach Larry Stefanek said. “We played real well up in Campbell River and coming off our win over NDSS to capture the league championship, the girls were running high.”
The Whalers defeated Nanaimo District Secondary School (NDSS) by a final score of 2–1 to capture the league title.
Emily Robertson was a standout for the Whalers during the season, earning team MVP honours at the Carihi Investors Tournament as well.
On Tuesday, the Whalers took on Brentwood College at home, taking it to them with a score of 5–1.
The Whalers now play again Thursday against Shawnigan Lake to determine their final seeding position heading into the North Island tournament.
