After a two-year hiatus, members of the Mid Island Floral Arrangement Club (MIFAC) will create small floral bouquets to spread some joy around the Parksville Qualicum Beach area on July 14.

The club began placing the small arrangements in 2014 as part of the Lonely Bouquet Project, started by Emily Avenson in the U.S. many years ago, according to Laurene Ebbett, MIFAC historian.

“The idea is to spread some good cheer,” Ebbett said. “This is the time when a lot of us have flowers in the garden.”

Members will get together and create the flower arrangements before dispersing them in public areas. Each bouquet will be accompanied by a note, which encourages people to take them home. The note reads:

Please take me home! I’m all alone and looking for a new home… perhaps I can live with you or a loved one? Our flower friends would love to hear from us and find out where we ended up! Please let them know.

The notes include MIFAC’s website address in case anyone wishes to get in touch.

Avenson’s idea began as a way to practice flower arranging, while also helping to make the world a bit brighter and more colourful. The tradition has spread around North America and Europe, according to Ebbett.

Earlier this year MIFAC created eight designs as part of the Mount Arrowsmith Rhododendron Society’s (MARS) Mother’s Day tour.
